Meditations

A meditation is a passage you set aside to dwell on. You make one from the words in front of you while you are reading, and FerventWord App keeps it.

Making One

Touch and hold a word to select it, drag the handles to take in as much as you want, and choose Make Meditation from the bar that appears. It works on the reading screen and on a plan's reading, and the passage stays exactly where it is — nothing is removed from what you were reading.

The reference travels with the words. You do not type it, and you do not have to keep the verse numbers in your head afterwards: the passage is saved with its citation already in it, worded the way Settings → Appearance → Include Reference is set — in parentheses after the text, or on a new line after it or before it. A passage across verses keeps its verse numbers, and a verse you selected only part of is marked with ..., exactly as Copy does it.

A meditation holds up to 1,000 characters. Select a shorter passage if FerventWord App says the selection will not fit; nothing is saved until it does, so there is no half of one to tidy up afterwards.

Where It Goes

Today shows the most recent one, under Your Meditation. That is the one you are dwelling on at the moment, and making another puts the new one there.

Menu → Your Meditations is the whole of them, newest first. Nothing on that screen counts them, dates the gap between them, or has anything to say about how often you make one.

Prayer Mentions

Prayer Mentions is the ministry's prayer reminder app, and meditations are the one thing the two apps share.

You do not need it. Make Meditation saves the passage here either way: it appears on Today, it is listed under Your Meditations, and it is in your export. If you do not have Prayer Mentions, FerventWord App keeps the passage for it as well, and it will be there if you ever add it.

If you do have it, the passage is sent across and becomes your meditation in Prayer Mentions when you next open it. FerventWord App says sent rather than set on purpose — it has written the passage, and opening the other app is what finishes the job.

It works in both directions. A meditation you make in Prayer Mentions is one of yours here, in the same list, and the newest of them is the one Today shows whichever app it came from. The list does not say which app each one came from, because that never changes what the meditation is.

Across Your Devices

Meditations are kept in a private iCloud database of their own — a second one, separate from the database holding your highlights, notes and plans — so a meditation made on your iPhone is on your iPad, and a meditation made in either app is in both.

Settings → Sync has a switch for it: Meditation history shared with Prayer Mentions. Turning it off stops this app on this device from taking part. It does not reach across to Prayer Mentions, and the two apps cannot see each other's switch.

Removing One

Swipe a meditation in Your Meditations to delete it. Because the two apps share one list, deleting it here deletes it in Prayer Mentions too, on every device — FerventWord App says so before it does anything.

Settings → Clear & Delete → Clear Your Meditations does the same for all of them at once.

Taking Them With You

Settings → Export & Import → Export Your Meditations writes every meditation you have, from both apps, to one file you can open and read anywhere. Your Data describes what that file holds.

There is no way to bring it back in, and that is a decision rather than something missing. A meditation you deleted is meant to stay deleted in both apps, and an import that carried one back would undo that on every device you own. The file is a copy to keep and to read, not a way to restore.
