Questions People Ask

The questions that come up most, and the honest answers to them.

Why Are There No Streaks Or Progress Bars?

Because of the one idea the whole app is built on: read today what God appointed for you today.

A streak is not a neutral number: it measures you. It turns a morning with the Bible into a figure that can go up or down, and on the day it breaks, the figure is what you think about instead of the passage. People who ask for one are usually asking because they want to read more — and a counter is a poor servant of that, because the first thing it does when it breaks is argue for giving up.

So there is no streak, no percentage, no completion badge, and nothing anywhere in FerventWord App that records that a passage was read. That is not an oversight and it is not on a list to build.

What the app does keep is history: Recent Passages remembers where you have been so you can go back, and you can clear it whenever you like. That is a tool for finding your place, not a record of how you are doing.

I Was Away For A Week. What Now?

You do not have to catch up. Today's reading is a plain fact about the date and the plan — nothing counts what you have read, so there is no backlog and nothing anywhere saying you are behind. Open the app and read today's.

If you would rather read the days you were away, every day of a plan is there: Edit Plan → Its Days, As A File writes the whole thing out as a PDF or a spreadsheet, and you can open any passage from Read at any time.

And if you would like the plan to begin where you are, change its start date in Edit Plan. The plan keeps its length and its shape; only its first day moves.

Why Is There Already A Reading Plan?

A new install is given Bible In 2 Years, started on 1 January, so the schedule is something you can look at rather than imagine. It is a demonstration. Remove it from Reading Plan Setup whenever you like, and it will not come back.

Which Version Should I Read?

Four are in the app already — ESV, BSB, KJV, and ASV — plus ESV + Audio. Any of them is a good place to begin, and you can change your mind at any time without losing anything: highlights and notes are kept against the words, not the edition.

Using Versions has more on how they differ and how to hold two at once.

Does It Work Without A Connection?

Yes, for reading. Every version, every reading plan, your highlights, your notes and the Bible Guide are all on your device. Offline Reading lists what needs a connection — in short: listening to ESV + Audio, syncing, giving, and sharing a plan by code.

Can I Get My Highlights And Notes Out?

Yes. Settings → Export & Import writes your plans and your notebooks to a file you can read without this app — ordinary text, with your own words in it. Anything you make here you can take out.

The Bible text itself is not in that file. It is licensed from its publishers and is not ours to hand on.

Who Can See What I Read?

Nobody. Your highlights, notes, notebooks, plans and recent passages sync to your own iCloud and nowhere else, and you can switch that off by category in Settings → Sync. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no usage reporting of any kind. Your Data lists the four things that ever leave your device, and what each one carries.

Is It Free? What Are The Donations For?

The app is free and there is nothing to buy inside it. FerventWord Ministries is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and Menu → Support The Ministry is there for anyone who wants to give to its work. Nothing in the app is withheld from anyone who does not.

Something Is Wrong. How Do I Tell You?

Menu → Feedback & Support. Send Feedback opens a message to [email protected], and Send A Diagnostic Report attaches a file describing your app version, your settings and counts of what is stored. You can read the whole file before you send it, and it never contains your notes, your highlights, or which passages you have been reading.
