Search finds a verse by the words in it, across the versions you choose, without a connection and without recording what you looked for.
Where It Is
The magnifying glass at the top left of every screen opens Search, and Menu → Search reaches the same place. The field takes the cursor as soon as it opens, so you can start typing straight away.
While you are typing, iOS puts its own controls in the top bar and takes the app's away — so the menu button is not there for a moment. Swiping in from the left edge still opens the menu, and tapping a result leaves the field and brings the bar back.
What A Search Matches
- A word matches longer words that begin with it. Searching for giant finds giants.
- Several words are all required, in any order and anywhere in the verse. shepherd want finds the verse that has both.
- Punctuation is ignored, so God-fearing is two words rather than an error.
- A word the index cannot use at all is dropped, and the screen says which.
How To Search
The How To Search row opens four settings, and they are remembered between sessions:
- Match Exact Phrase — the words must appear together, in that order, and each must be a whole word. With it on, giant no longer finds giants.
- Bibles Searched — one version or several. Each is searched separately and the results are listed together.
- Look In — the whole Bible, the Old Testament, the New Testament, or one book.
- Order — Bible order, or most relevant first.
The collapsed row says what those four are set to, so a search that was narrowed a week ago cannot quietly look like a Bible with words missing from it.
What A Result Shows
Each row is the reference, the version it was found in, and the verse with your words in bold. Tapping it opens that verse in Read. Read remembers where you were before you searched, and where you got to in the results.
What Is Not Recorded
Nothing you search for is stored — not on your device, not in your iCloud, and not on any server. There is no search history to clear, because there is none to keep. The four settings above are remembered; the words are not.
Search runs entirely on your device. It is one of the things that works with no connection at all.
